Penguins
The Penguins had a strong start in Game 5 against the Capitals Saturday night, but the momentum would eventually shift to the Caps.
Sidney Crosby returned five days after suffering a concussion on a Matt Kiskanen cross-check to the head in Game 3 last Monday night. Last night, Crosby had an assist and three shots on goal, and reported no issues after the game.
The Pens took a lead in the first period on a goal by Carl Hagelin, and again in the second during the power play on a goal by Phil Kessel.
Unfortunately, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury gave up three goals in five minutes during the third period, boosting the Capitals from a one-goal deficit to a two-goal lead, resulting in a 4-2 victory.
The Pens still lead the series 3-2, but a victory in Game 6 at home Monday night is crucial, as a win will secure the series for the Pens. Should they lose, it’s back to Washington for the series final, Game. The puck drops at 7:30.
Pirates
Despite some potentially good plays, the Bucs struggled to bring in runs against the Brewers Saturday, but eventually achieved a 2-1 victory. Josh Harrison singled home Gift Ngoepe with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. It was Harrison’s seventh career walkoff hit.
Starter Gerrit Cole played well, giving up a run on two hits, walked two and struck out eight. It was the fifth consecutive start for Cole in which he has allowed two or fewer earned runs.
The Pirates put Jameson Taillon on the 10-day disabled list because of a sore groin, which is reported to not be related to hernia surgery he had in July, 2015. He joins on the list Antonio Bastardo, Adam Frazier, and David Freese. Josh Lindblom was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Pregame coverage for the Bucs begins at 12:35 today on AM 1160 WCCS and 101.1 FM.
Kentucky Derby
Always Dreaming pulled away from the field to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby on a muddy track yesterday.
Always Dreaming started in the No. 5 post and stayed toward the front for most of the race. He took over the lead before the final turn and faced little resistance on the home stretch, finishing well before runner-up Lookin At Lee and third-place Battle of Midway.
This is the second career Kentucky Derby win for both trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John R. Velazquez.
