The Penguins scored three goals in the second period and three more in the third, including a empty-netter, to defeat Washington, 6-2, Saturday night at the Verizon Center. The Pens took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 second round of the NHL playoffs.
Phil Kessel and Jake Guentzel each had two goals and an assist, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves.
The Pens won despite being out shot 36-24. Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was pulled after allowing three goals on 14 shots in the first two periods.
The series resumes on Monday in Pittsburgh.
