The state Department of Environmental Protection has announced 79 projects across the commonwealth that will receive almost $1.2 million in Environmental Educations Grants.
DEP prioritized projects addressing water education and climate change, the first time climate change has been cited as a factor for awarding the grants. In a news release, Governor Wolf says “environmental justice” grants are included in the grant program for the first time, which acting DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell says ensures that those who are “historically disenfranchised” are informed about decisions and actions that affect their environment.
Two of the DEP grants will go to Indiana County entities. The IUP Research Institute: Western PA Watershed Collaboration was awarded $44,662, and the Evergreen Conservancy will receive $3,000 for the Indiana County GeoTrail.
