The state has released a statistical analysis of fatal crashes by county, showing the number of crashes and contributing factors. The study covers the last twenty years, from 1997 to 2016.
Twenty-one people died in crashes in Indiana County last year, up from 17 the year before. The 21 fatalities were tied with four other years for second-most, and were the most since 2010, when there were 23.
Fourteen of the fatalities were alcohol-related and fourteen were speeding-related. Four involved aggressive drivers, three involved heavy trucks, and five were motorcycles. Nine of the collisions were with fixed objects. One was a tree, two were utility poles, and two were guiderails. Five fatal crashes were at intersections, two of them at intersections with traffic lights, but neither of them happened when a driver ran a light.
The report does not detail how many of the fatalities were drivers and how many were passengers, but it does note that one was a pedestrian.
Statewide, the average county had 17.7 crash fatalities last year.
