The Northern Cambria School District is looking for a new superintendent, but there are questions about the resignation of the current top administrator. Rick Huffman was only hired last July, and on Tuesday he tendered his retirement notice, which he said was due to health reasons. The school board did not accept the retirement, tabling the matter until it receives documentation related to Huffman’s health.
Huffman is a former United School District superintendent who was serving in the same post at Windber Area when he announced his retirement last year. But in an unusual maneuver, Northern Cambria Superintendent Joseph Kimmell was hired at Windber and Huffman ended up signing a five-year contract at Northern Cambria.
While the school board has not indicated skepticism about the reason for Huffman’s retirement, they voted on Tuesday to launch an audit of the district’s books from the day of his hiring, July 5th of last year, through yesterday’s date.
Elementary School Principal Tom Rocco was named interim superintendent as Huffman continues on medical leave.
