The Homer Center School Board got some information about kindergarten literacy at their meeting last night.
In a report from Special Education Director Beth Genchur, 41 kindergarten students were tested on literacy and a majority of the scores were in the lower levels for Print Awareness, Letter Identification and Name Writing. Genchur said that it shows that students are coming into kindergarten behind where the district anticipates them to be, and she talks about what they will look at to help students out. This could include expanding the district’s offerings, looking at how they help kids through the “ABC’s And Me” Program, and communicating and building relationships with those who are working with pre-schoolers. Discussion on this will continue at the District’s next planning meeting.
In other business, the board approved by a 5-2 vote the 2017-2018 district calendar with the first student day on August 23rd and last student day on May 31st. Michael Bertig and Justin Smyers voted against the calendar. The board also added April 18th to the school calendar as a student day to make up for the snow day on March 14th, and the board also approved the ARIN IU 28 General Operating Budget at $3,270,419. Homer-Center’s contribution through withholding is $27,887.
