The Saltsburg Trojans defeated Williamsburg, 64-45, Thursday night at St. Francis University for the District 6 Class A championship.
It’s Saltsburg’s fourth District 6 title and first since 2003, but Williamsburg didn’t go quietly. With a big second quarter from Nick Michelone, the Pirates led 19-16 about halfway through the period. Michelone hit three three-pointers and scored 11 in the second quarter, but Saltsburg’s Nick Porter and Dan Shirley led the Trojans comeback. Porter put up 9 in the quarter and Shirley scored 8 as Saltsburg surged ahead to take a 33-27 lead at the half.
After Williamsburg closed to within four points in the third quarter, Saltsburg went on a 9-2 run at the start of the fourth and finally pulled away for the win.
Porter finished with 21 points, Shirley with 17, and Jordan Booth scored 14. Saltsburg was 11-for-12 from the foul line for the game.
The Trojans will begin play in the PIAA playoffs a week from today.
