There are a number of preliminary hearings scheduled today in the courtroom of District Judge George Thachik. One of them is for 19-year-old Brady DiStefano of Johnstown, who is charged with aggravated assault in the death of a fellow IUP student on February 3rd.
20-year-old Caleb Zweig of Rockville, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the Indiana Regional Medical Center at 12:13 AM on the 4th. The two men had been fighting in the 800 block of Wayne Avenue and a witness pulled DiStefano off the unconscious victim. The witness told police that DiStefano had been choking Zweig. DiStefano told police that Zweig pulled him to the ground as they scuffled.
An official cause of death will not be established until the return of toxicology test results, and there could be more charges against DiStefano. He’s free after posting $50,000 bond and is expected before Judge Thachik at one o’clock this afternoon, but there’s a good chance the hearing will be continued to a later date.
