Jan. 30, 2017
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – IUP’s Dante Lombardi (Indiana, Pa./The Kiski School) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Athlete of the Week for men’s basketball for the second time this year. The league’s weekly awards were announced on Monday afternoon.
The sophomore point guard averaged team-bests of 15.0 points and 9.0 assists in helping the sixth-ranked Crimson Hawks to road wins over Seton Hill and Gannon last week.
Lombardi secured his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists in an 88-73 win at Seton Hill on Saturday. He followed that up a game-high 19 points and dished out seven assists in a 72-62 win at Gannon, which entered the weekend two games back of IUP in the standings, on Saturday.
The win at Gannon put an end to the Golden Knights eight-game win streak and gave IUP a three-game lead in the division with seven left to play. Lombardi went 7-of-14 from the field, including 4-9 from three-point range, extending his streak to 26 straight games with a three-pointer.
UPDATED (3:26 p.m.): On Monday afternoon, Lombardi was credited with 23 points at Gannon instead of 19, due to a free throw discrepany. The 23 points is a new career-high for Lombardi and it lifted his average to 17.0 points in two games last week.
