IUP’s Carolyn Appleby named PSAC West Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – IUP sophomore guard Carolyn Appleby (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Central Catholic) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball. The weekly awards were announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Appleby averaged a team-best 20.5 points in leading the Crimson Hawks to a pair of road wins over Seton Hill and Gannon last week. She shot 50.0 percent (15-of-30) from the field, including 6-of-12 from three-point range, and made all five of her free throw attempts
Appleby scored a career-high 24 points in the 72-51 win at Seton Hill, going 5-of-8 from three-point range. She scored 10 of those points in the fourth quarter alone, as IUP outscored Seton Hill 28-8 over the final 10 minutes of play.
She followed that with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting at Gannon, helping IUP climb out of a 17-point second quarter deficit in a 62-57 comeback win at Gannon on Saturday.
Appleby’s season update
IUP’s second leading scorer on the year, Appleby is averaging 13.2 points and is shooting 34.5 percent from three-point range, making 30 from beyond the arc.
Up next
Appleby and the Crimson Hawks host Mercyhurst on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex. IUP enters the matchup in third place in the PSAC West with a 12-3 league record, while Mercyhurst is fourth at 11-3. The Crimson Hawks won the first matchup 64-54 in Erie on Jan. 9.
