Last year the IUP basketball teams dropped a doubleheader at Seton Hill in Greensburg. Not so this year, as the Crimson Hawks swept a pair of PSAC West games last night.
The IUP women snapped a three-game losing streak with an outstanding fourth quarter, outscoring the Griffins, 28-8, while shooting 73 percent en route to a 72-51 win.
Sophomore point guard Carolyn Appleby returned to her hometown, leading the way with 24 points. Megan Smith added 13 points and Halle Denman, a defensive specialist, hit double figures with 11 points.
The win moves Coach Tom McConnell’s team into a third-place tie with Mercyhurst.
Coach Joe Lombardi’s men, No. 6 in the nation, made it nine straight wins with an 88-73 victory, keeping their first-place lead at two games with a trip to second-place Gannon Saturday afternoon.
The offense was the difference, headed up by Cobo Diaz with another double-double of 27 points and 12 rebounds. Anthony Glover added 21 points, Blake Danielak came off the bench to tally 19 points. Dante Lombardi also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
