Hugh Wallace Pollock, age 88 of Marion Center, died Monday, January 2, 2017 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
He was born in 1928 in Indiana to Clark and Mary Hopkins Pollock.
His generation experienced kerosene lanterns, icebox refrigeration, coal stove cooking, and travel in a 1929 Model A Ford. His farm chores included horse drawn hay making, and hand milking from age 10. The transition to electricity came when he was 13. As a young man he developed a lifelong enjoyment for reading the Bible, Christian books, and other writings about current events.
To prepare for his future bride, Ethel Grace Mears, Wallace and his father moved a house on log skids nearly one half mile across the farm in 1948. In the 1950s he supervised the construction of buildings to expand the farm production of potatoes, dairy, and chickens. He developed friendships with many farm employees, store managers, and farm customers. His example of honesty and discipline was passed on to his sons as they worked together on the family farm. He invested about 40 years in the potato business and 70 years in dairy farming. He was still feeding the cows and calves daily at age 81.
He frequently shared his sense of humor such as awakening his family to the sound of firecrackers early on July 4th.
Wallace served as an officer on the following County Agricultural boards: Farm Bureau, Agricultural Extension, Dairy Herd Improvement Assoc, and the Jersey Cattle Club.
He enjoyed traveling to Florida, Western USA, Canada, Israel, and Egypt.
Wallace and Ethel Grace were a team whose first priorities were knowing God and serving others. They provided Daily Bread Devotionals at Church for many years. Wallace served the Tanoma United Methodist Church as an adult Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. His gifts of patience and faithfulness were fully demonstrated by the loving care for his special needs son Danny. Wallace and Ethel Grace taught their family the eternal value of God’s word, prayer, and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Wallace’s life work of digging out a field of potatoes for a crew of workers to harvest is an illustration of God’s Harvest of human souls. In John 4:35 Jesus said “Behold I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest”. Jesus died on a cross to take the punishment for our sin. Each person who accepts the forgiveness and new life of Christ will become part of God’s harvest. Because Wallace knew Jesus as his personal Savior, he will enjoy eternity in God’s beautiful heavenly Kingdom ofJoy and Peace.
Wallace is survived by three sons, David and wife Carolyn, Marion Center; Mark and wife Lori, Marion Center; Daniel, at home; five grandchildren, Kevin and wife Sally; Karl and wife Angela; Keith and wife Erica, all of Marion Center; Crystal Smith and husband Neal, Monroeville; Miranda Pollock, New Orleans, LA; 11 and soon to be 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; his brother Herbert Pollock, Indiana; his sister Laura Pollock Resener, Nashville, TN.
