There is new court action in the legal cases against Ray Shetler Jr., the former New Florence man acquitted of homicide in the shooting death of a police officer in 2015 but convicted on charges related to his escape attempt after the shooting, and in a subsequent assault case involving police and Westmoreland County detectives.
Shetler was sentenced to prison for the assault case in January but was immediately paroled due to credit for time already served. In March, he was sentenced to serve two-and-a-half years in state prison for a probation violation for his conviction in the escape offenses.
In May, Judge Bilik-FeFazio denied Shetler’s post-trial motions, but he is appealing the March sentencing. The latest development is a filing last week of his attorney’s required concise statement of the matters contained in his appeal. He is being represented by the Westmoreland County Public Defender’s Office.
Shetler is serving his time at SCI Forest County. No date has been announced for his next court action.
