Leatha (Colgan) Smith, 82, of Glen Campbell, PA died on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 in Montgomery Twp., Indiana Co., PA.
The daughter of Peter J. and Lulu “May” (Hetrich) Colgan, she was born on April 26, 1936 in Mountain View, CA.
Leatha was a 1955 graduate of the Montgomery Twp. High School. She had attended the Gipsy Christian Church, where she had been involved in many church and community activities.
She married Norman Benjamin “Ben” Smith on August 9, 1955 and they shared forty-one years of marriage prior to his death on October 15, 1996.
For many years Leatha had been employed as a caregiver in private homes.
Active in her local community, Leatha served for most of her adult life on the Montgomery Twp. Board of Elections as the Minority Inspector of Elections. She was a longtime member of the Glen Campbell American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, where she held various positions. Additionally, she was a member of the American Legions Ladies Auxiliary County Council.
An extremely supportive parent, Leatha traveled to her children’s activities, even attending events away from the school district to cheer on her kids. She had been very active in the Purchase Line PTA and the Glen Campbell Hi-Steppers while her children were growing up.
For decades Leatha was a member of the Good Times Bowling league. She invariably won many bowling trophies every year.
Known for her sense of fun and humor, Leatha enjoyed “clowning around.” She would dress as a clown and perform at local events and celebrations.
Giving to others, she was a faithful and loyal American Red Cross blood donor donating gallons upon gallons of her own blood to help others in need. Even in her death, she wished to help others and was a CORE organ donor.
Surviving are her seven children: Nancy Vanderbom and husband Ronald of Valley Center, KS; Inez Smith of Clymer, PA; Norman “Smoke” Smith and wife Brenda of Indiana, PA; Janet Smith of White Post, VA; George “Jay” Smith and wife Leslie of Middletown, VA; Leslie Swan and husband Glenn of Lititz, PA and Janine Smith of Johnstown, PA; twenty-five grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; sister, Delores “Jo” Orr of St. Petersburg, FL; sister-in-law, Jean Savel of Chagrin Falls, OH; brother-in-law, Robert Smith and wife Betty of Gipsy, PA and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben and her sister, Nancy Pavone.
Family and friends will be received from 2-4:00 and 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2019 at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, PA, where a 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 with Pastor Dale Leverknight officiating. Interment will be at the Rowley Cemetery, Hillsdale, PA.
